UK banks question Apple Pay over data concerns

The much-awaited launch of ‘Apple Pay’, the service that could convince consumers to pay with mobile phones, is currently under pressure as the UK’s leading banks question data access, among other terms.

Apple hopes to introduce its iPhone ‘wave and pay’ service, Apple Pay, to the high street in the first half of 2015, however this timing could be effected if current negotiations between Apple and at least one of the biggest banks aren’t cleared up in good time.

Technology rises in US hospitality

Technology use, mobile in particular, in US restaurants is on the up. Information about a restaurant, viewing menus, reading online reviews, using rewards and special deals, and ordering takeout or delivery are the top usages; this is followed by looking up nutrition information and paying for meals.

Customers’ reasons for not using technology included a preference for dealing with people, not knowing how to use the devices, as well as not trusting the tools to work correctly.

iBeacon vs NFC in the battle of mobile payment technology

A new feature called iBeacon, from Apple, is currently causing waves in the industry with fears that it could kill off NFC (near-field communications), the wireless technology associated with mobile payments. iBeacon, introduced as a feature of Apple’s iOS 7, uses Bluetooth Low Energy(BLE) to create beacons (small wireless sensors) that alert mobile phone apps when users enter them.

Mobile (NFC) payments driven forward by Visa and Samsung partnership

The time of paying through a mobile phone as the norm got one step closer this week following a deal between Visa and Samsung that will see Visa’s new payment app running on Samsung handsets. Customers will be able to add Visa payment account information via the app and then go on to make contactless payments using their mobile phones.
